Woodford Progressive Synagogue

We believe the practice’s philosophy works.

WE KNOW IT WINS AWARDS!

In 1992, Stephen Radley received an award for alterations to a local Synagogue from the London Borough of Redbridge under their Merit Award scheme.

These awards were presented every two years for ‘contributions to the quality of the environment’ of the Borough.

The Synagogue project involved the construction of a new first floor on a previously single storey building to accommodate classrooms for a Religion School, a library, and an office for the Rabbi. The ground floor was altered to provide facilities for disabled users, and the main elevation was remodelled with a new entrance / staircase tower added, and the forecourt enclosed.

Over many months, Stephen worked with the Synagogue’s own building committee to evolve the design, resolving various conflicting requirements, all within the constraints imposed by a very awkward triangular site, and a limited budget.
